Training Your Tames

Q: Can a tamed animal be trained?

A: Ohhhh yes....

Contrary to popular belief, tamed animals gain in stats and skills almost the same way players do, The animal you get is a "newbie" animal, it is assigned a random figure for a range of skills and stats, that is how it starts, but that is By no means how it ends!

You can train wolves up to kill lizard men, polar bears up to kill ogres, and dragons up rip up other dragons and still have 1/2 of their health in place.

Horses are another animal that is extremely useful to "train", you can increase the amount of dex the horse has Dramatically (the amount of dex determines how long it can gallop without having to Stop and rest, as well as how often it can "attack" in combat.)

Tames can gain skill in at least these following areas:
Tactics
Parry
Magery (If its a magic using animal.)
Magic Resist

Probably a few other areas.

They Can also gain Str., Dex, and Int.

You probably remember Wotan one of the two bears that I used in the GM animal lore and GM veterinary chapters. This is him (re named so the "o" in his name is smaller). As you might recall Wotan was trained up well enough to end up Killing the other Training bear, (and ME!) when I did some poorly executed training commands, starting with "Wotan kill me" then me not being able to escape the boat...*shakes head* lol

Anyway, Wotan had about 6 hours total combat time against another polar bear, a few days later I took him back to ICE isle where I tamed him. I wanted to demonstrate how he stacked up against other wild polar bears.

He managed to kill this one and have about 1/2 of his hit points afterwards, I did no healing or interference at all in the combat.

Here he is against a "tame and release" bear...

Pretty much the same thing, so I decided to get ambitious and see if he could take 2 wild polar bears at once.

After a few moments it was clear that Wotan was outmatched.

I Gated him to safety before the other bears killed my "Gladiator" bear

His earlier 6 hours of training with the other polar bear while I was working on animal lore and vet gave him a good head start. He was clearly stronger however he wasn't "ripping up" the way that its possible. Basically training an animal is just like training up your own skills, you will gain a lot faster fighting Earth Elementals that you would Orcs. Because earth eles are much tougher they are easier to gain skill from. Since Wotan fought the other polar bear for 6 hours, its probable that that is almost as far as another polar bear for an opponent can take him.

I gated us both to the North Yew wilderness area, there is a wide mix of monsters there, but not too dense a population of them, so if you get in trouble you can "retreat" safely and usually not be overwhelmed.

The Corpser was a good match for Wotan while he was at this level, but for training I want to stress, keep healing your bear at all times, if you hit a pocket of Lag, or if other monsters show up you could loose an animal that you have put a lot of work in.

After a while I was having him take on multiple creatures (with a lot of bandaging during the combats) he was building good tactics I was sure, but with multiple creatures he was building up his "parry" skill like crazy too.

One of the problems with multiple creatures is it takes a while for the tame to kill them both, and the game "forgets" that you ordered your tame to kill them....which puts you out of looting rights until the corps goes gray lol

Magic resistance is another thing that tames can learn, you have to be very "on top of it" when it comes to bandages, and G-healing your pets tho because magic throwing creatures can stack up the damage on your tame FAST.

Fighting a Melee and a Magic using creature was kind of a Graduation for today's training (I had the bear out about an hour for all this)

I gated him back to town, Fed and healed him then took him to ICE isle once more to see how he did against other polar bears.

Ripped em up....

You can train a pet up, way UP. The difference between a Tough pet, and a Tough as Nails-Razor wire one is having them train against stronger and stronger things. If you have a decent healing ability this is a Great way to get the most out of your tames. (Which is far more than most tamers even realize is possible) In addition to the AWSOME PvM Results, the Faction wars are amazing using Trained Animals against newly tamed ones.

Its hard to say what the ceiling is on how high each individual pet can be tamed, and if its the same "top end" for similar pets.
